On my sports routine

As I wrote in my last blog post, I am now trying to commit to sports regularly, starting small. It is an inner fight, mentally and physically. Mentally as my head tells me that I should bring more intensity to the workout so that it counts, that I should push harder and that I could do better than this. My body, on the other hand, is very realistic and reminds me with pain, discomfort, and breathlessness that I need to take it easy, that it has only been a week since I started this fitness project, and that I cannot expect to be killing it in this short amount of time.
I have started tapping the wisdom of my body and while it is hard to accept that I may never be as sporty as I used to be (maybe also because I am not getting younger as my doctors care to tell me regularly 😊) baby steps will help me see some results, one day. I keep going.

Building on the foundations

I had always been very sporty. Before getting my 1st cancer I was in the best shape ever. After that, I have not managed to get back to my old sporty self. The challenge is that when it comes to sport, for me it is an all-or-nothing attitude. And the energy is just not there to do the type of sports routine that I so much enjoy: high intensity, challenging, going daily. I have learned the hard way that I need to take baby steps and start building on the foundations. Commit to go at least for a short walk, a few abs after waking up, some yoga, just start small and build from there, with patience and resilience. I am starting small today, with the modifier version of the home workout T25 from the one and only Shaun T. Let's see where this takes me. Keep you posted.

Back in 2008, I ran my first (and only) half-marathon; I was in fantastic shape and was doing sports daily. Five months later I was diagnosed with Leukemia and since then, even if now in remission, my level of fitness has never been the same. I have good and bad phases.  I still struggle to go back to a sports routine; the energy is just not there.  I won’t have energy for the other if I do certain things and it is very frustrating and saddening.

With my many roles (in no particular order) as a mother, woman, coach, friend, family member, patient, employee, etc. conscious prioritization and goal setting are required regularly.  And strategical energy allocation and daily planning accordingly.

Regular exercise is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, so I need to make sure this fits into my calendar.  Even if only a few minutes a day.  Today I went Nordic-Walking and enjoyed the beautiful sunny day and this great view.  I find spending time in nature very relaxing, and it is one of my many resources for finding inner peace.  What are your resources?

"The worst is finally over"

Once your cancer treatment finishes, this is very likely one of the first thoughts that comes to mind, to you and to loved ones: “the worst is finally over”.   It is kind of the truth, but it is not as simple as that.  While the grueling therapy may be behind, the processing of the traumatic experience, the efforts of getting back to some sort of normality, the omnipresent fear or a recurrence could be at times as overwhelming as the treatment itself. So a great deal of self-compassion, patience and perseverance are required during this physical and emotional healing process.    Be kind to yourselves.

 “Everything happens for a reason”

To be honest, I am not sure this is the right sentence formulation to comfort someone going through cancer. There is no reason why someone should have this illness.  I find it a tricky question, that depending on where the patient find himself emotionally, trying to answer it could lead to  unresourceful thoughts that could trigger feelings of guilt or shame, sadness and/or trauma.

“I am sorry this is happening” is in my opinion more helpful. At some point, one may explore the positive or more hopeful aspect to this life crisis, even though this may not be immediately apparent. This is the Post- Traumatic Growth, which doesn’t deny deep distress, but rather suggests that adversity can unintentionally give changes in understanding of oneself, the connection with others, and how we view the world, and a good example: a renewed appreciation for life.

No News is No news

With cancer it is challenging to know where you stand. If you do not hear back timely from a doctor after a biopsy, the say “No News Good News” does not necessarily apply.  When you do not hear for some time from a friend that is facing cancer, the thought “No news is Bad news” does not necessarily apply.  I believe the best approach is “No news is No News”….better ask and clarify, so you don’t start worrying about what could be.  And maybe allow some time for the news (whether good or bad) have been digested.

No News is No news

As if nothing had happened

This photo was taken the day after my second tongue surgery. Whomever sees the photo may not believe that I had been through weeks of emotional torment and uncertainty, that I was unable to talk because of the pain and that I was about to start a forced liquid diet of several weeks to allow the wound healing process.  The happiness I radiate is for the gratitude of knowing that no treatment was going to be necessary, that the tumour had been removed in its entirety and that cancer had not spread.  Best case scenario of a shitty situation. WHAT A RELIEF!

I was given medical leave of a week and I was set to continue to go on with my life as if nothing had happened. Easier said than done, the emotional blow was so strong and although I feel really good and full of energy, it is time to process the experience, and I am doing so with a professional.

Now that the worst is over, I am fine with hearing an "Everything is going to be fine."

Cancer #2

Doctors made it clear from the very start of my Leukemia treatment back in 2009 that after remission, a second cancer was always a possibility.  To this day, I still go to medical check-ups now "only" every 2 months, mainly to catch any irregularities early enough to be able to react quickly.  And this paid off: last November 2021, I was diagnosed with an early-stage tongue cancer.
2 operations, 3 biopsies, an MRI, a CT and a panendoscopy later, I was given the all clear and was cancer-free and good to move on within 6 weeks.  With minimal physical collateral damage. Woo Hoo!!!
But the emotional toll was devastating.  I could not believe that after 12 years in remission, feeling in the best shape of my life, having done the emotional healing work, thriving, considering the cancer chapter closed, it came back, When I heard the diagnosis, it felt like a punch in the gut, my heart went numb and everything around me went blur.  What the hell is going on???  This nightmare CANNOT be happening....The thought of potentially having to go again through a grueling chemotherapy treatment, medical leave, pain, chronic fatigue, isolation, the possibility of facing consequences  for my speech and eating due to losing a part of my tongue,  it all was too much for me.
This time round I had better tools to cope emotionally with the situation,  I also had the support of my adorable sons, my amazing family, my supportive colleagues and my loyal, beautiful friends, and a team of doctors that have my best interest at heart.  And my spirituality, all of which allowed me to overcome this challenge.
2022 started very well, I am processing the experience with professionals and digesting finding the silver lining. Happy start into the new year.

Krebs #2

A NUESTRA SALUD

Demos gracias. Seamos compasivos.  Escuchemos a nuestro cuerpo. Vivamos intensamente.

Gracias por estar siempre allí.

Los quiero mucho!

MARIANGELA 2.0

What began as a possible death sentence, ended up being a gift of life.
The cancer diagnosis is normally related to negative experiences, something dark, a lot of pain. And although that was in good part so, my chapter cancer has been very enriching and has allowed me to be reborn and to start my next chapter as a better version of myself.
So many lessons have been learned that if I had to summarize them I could do it in the following way, in no particular order:

  1. Being vulnerable is not a synonym of weakness, but strength.
  2. Difficult times, like good times, are temporary.
  3. Life is one, and you have to live it intensely and being present.
  4. We must focus on the positive, even in the bad there is something good.
  5. Love heals.
  6. Feelings of sadness, frustration, anger in difficult moments are valid and must be accepted. But they should not be permanent.
  7. Everything that happens to us, has a message from which we must learn.
  8. Journal writing is therapeutic and healing.
  9. Accepting mortality is a gift of life. It is liberating, it allows to live intensely.
  10. You have to eliminate toxicity in your life: relationships, food, work, thoughts…
  11. To feel gratitude even for the little things gives good energy.
  12. God has his time. You have to accept that things happen when and how they have to happen.
  13. Prayer is a key tool for healing.
  14. Healthy mind in healthy body. Exercise regularly. Your body is your temple.
  15. To be in balance, your body and your mind have to work as a team.
  16. You have to follow your instincts.
  17. Live from a place of love and gratitude and not fear.
  18. Eat healthy.
  19. Human connection is extremely important. When you are with someone, be always present.
  20. We are strong and resilient and we have a great capacity to adapt in crisis situations.
  21. Visualization your desired outcome is key.
  22. Believing is power.
  23. Being realistic and being positive is not the same. It is what is.
  24. Never lose hope.
  25. Doctors and hospital staff are human beings. You have to value them.
  26. We all have a life purpose that we have to discover and execute, to live a meaningful life
  27. Beauty is internal
  28. Be kind to one another, we each have our own struggles.
And many more things that a blog could write about this. But I leave it there. For learning and growth never ends.

Celebrate life. Value what you have. Grow as a person. Love one another. Be grateful. Be compassionate.  Listen to your body. Live intensely.

Thanks for always being there.

I love you so much!

Bronquitis bacterial

Bacterial bronquitis

I dislike getting sick.I have been very lucky (or, because I take great care) of not getting very sick in the last few years, but this time I have fallen down with a bacterial bronchitis that has knocked me down and i have been two weeks on sick leave.

Post cancer my tolerance level to sickness is almost zero, I feel that my patience quota has already been exhausted (PLEASE do not recommend to me that I have patience when I am ill) and that my being sick quota was already covered with all that chemotherapy and sequels.

It takes me superhuman efforts and energy not to be frustrated and depressed.

What I have learned is to give the body rest to recover, and accept that this, too, shall pass.

Salud.

Celebrating life

I always love to celebrate my birthday, now much more. And more than a celebration to my person, it is a celebration of life.

Life is one, you have to live it. Cheers.

Coleccionar momentos, no cosas

He decidido coleccionar momentos, experiencias y menos cosas materiales.

Collect moments not things

For many years after the illness I was forbidden to travel abroad. So I promised myself that after healing I would travel a lot. And I'm in travel mode.
I love traveling, it allows me to open my horizons, it allows me to live unforgettable adventures, to meet different and interesting people, to learn from other cultures, it is very enriching.
I have decided to collect moments, experiences and less material things.

Bye cortisone

Last Wednesday I received THE news.

The doctor informed me that I can finally stop taking cortisone. I jumped, screamed, cried of emotion ... I succeeded!
It was 9 years taking cortison and it was a big question mark if the day would come when i could stop it. And the moment arrived. Like many other positive moments in this path of recovery, this has been been the result of much effort, resilience, decisions, faith a lot of patience and a bit of luck. Although I believe in luck, I believe more than if you want something you have to focus on your goals and visualize success.
I'm very grateful.

Saludos

Today 26th November 2017 is the 8th aniversary of my stem cell transplant. I am most grateful to my brother Pasquale for his donation. He saved my life. He is my superhero.

I have recovered marvelously, but it is cleat that there are side efects to such an invasive treatement. There is always the need to see my hematologist every two months, an now and then a specialist, and of course i still go to Basel to my yearly check-ups to. But nothing to be concerned about!

2017 has been an intense year, many changes, lots of travel, positivism that God will provide blessings and good things will come.

Cheers.

Viviendo momentos intensos y maravillosos
