Cancer #2

Cancer #2

Doctors made it clear from the very start of my Leukemia treatment back in 2009 that after remission, a second cancer was always a possibility.  To this day, I still go to medical check-ups now "only" every 2 months, mainly to catch any irregularities early enough to be able to react quickly.  And this paid off: last November 2021, I was diagnosed with an early-stage tongue cancer.
2 operations, 3 biopsies, an MRI, a CT and a panendoscopy later, I was given the all clear and was cancer-free and good to move on within 6 weeks.  With minimal physical collateral damage. Woo Hoo!!!
But the emotional toll was devastating.  I could not believe that after 12 years in remission, feeling in the best shape of my life, having done the emotional healing work, thriving, considering the cancer chapter closed, it came back, When I heard the diagnosis, it felt like a punch in the gut, my heart went numb and everything around me went blur.  What the hell is going on???  This nightmare CANNOT be happening....The thought of potentially having to go again through a grueling chemotherapy treatment, medical leave, pain, chronic fatigue, isolation, the possibility of facing consequences  for my speech and eating due to losing a part of my tongue,  it all was too much for me.
This time round I had better tools to cope emotionally with the situation,  I also had the support of my adorable sons, my amazing family, my supportive colleagues and my loyal, beautiful friends, and a team of doctors that have my best interest at heart.  And my spirituality, all of which allowed me to overcome this challenge.
2022 started very well, I am processing the experience with professionals and digesting finding the silver lining. Happy start into the new year.

Krebs #2

A NUESTRA SALUD

Demos gracias. Seamos compasivos.  Escuchemos a nuestro cuerpo. Vivamos intensamente.

Gracias por estar siempre allí.

Los quiero mucho!

What began as a possible death sentence, ended up being a gift of life.
The cancer diagnosis is normally related to negative experiences, something dark, a lot of pain. And although that was in good part so, my chapter cancer has been very enriching and has allowed me to be reborn and to start my next chapter as a better version of myself.
So many lessons have been learned that if I had to summarize them I could do it in the following way, in no particular order:

  1. Being vulnerable is not a synonym of weakness, but strength.
  2. Difficult times, like good times, are temporary.
  3. Life is one, and you have to live it intensely and being present.
  4. We must focus on the positive, even in the bad there is something good.
  5. Love heals.
  6. Feelings of sadness, frustration, anger in difficult moments are valid and must be accepted. But they should not be permanent.
  7. Everything that happens to us, has a message from which we must learn.
  8. Journal writing is therapeutic and healing.
  9. Accepting mortality is a gift of life. It is liberating, it allows to live intensely.
  10. You have to eliminate toxicity in your life: relationships, food, work, thoughts…
  11. To feel gratitude even for the little things gives good energy.
  12. God has his time. You have to accept that things happen when and how they have to happen.
  13. Prayer is a key tool for healing.
  14. Healthy mind in healthy body. Exercise regularly. Your body is your temple.
  15. To be in balance, your body and your mind have to work as a team.
  16. You have to follow your instincts.
  17. Live from a place of love and gratitude and not fear.
  18. Eat healthy.
  19. Human connection is extremely important. When you are with someone, be always present.
  20. We are strong and resilient and we have a great capacity to adapt in crisis situations.
  21. Visualization your desired outcome is key.
  22. Believing is power.
  23. Being realistic and being positive is not the same. It is what is.
  24. Never lose hope.
  25. Doctors and hospital staff are human beings. You have to value them.
  26. We all have a life purpose that we have to discover and execute, to live a meaningful life
  27. Beauty is internal
  28. Be kind to one another, we each have our own struggles.
And many more things that a blog could write about this. But I leave it there. For learning and growth never ends.

Celebrate life. Value what you have. Grow as a person. Love one another. Be grateful. Be compassionate.  Listen to your body. Live intensely.

Thanks for always being there.

I love you so much!

Bronquitis bacterial

Bacterial bronquitis

I dislike getting sick.I have been very lucky (or, because I take great care) of not getting very sick in the last few years, but this time I have fallen down with a bacterial bronchitis that has knocked me down and i have been two weeks on sick leave.

Post cancer my tolerance level to sickness is almost zero, I feel that my patience quota has already been exhausted (PLEASE do not recommend to me that I have patience when I am ill) and that my being sick quota was already covered with all that chemotherapy and sequels.

It takes me superhuman efforts and energy not to be frustrated and depressed.

What I have learned is to give the body rest to recover, and accept that this, too, shall pass.

Salud.

Celebrating life

I always love to celebrate my birthday, now much more. And more than a celebration to my person, it is a celebration of life.

Life is one, you have to live it. Cheers.

Coleccionar momentos, no cosas

He decidido coleccionar momentos, experiencias y menos cosas materiales.

Collect moments not things

For many years after the illness I was forbidden to travel abroad. So I promised myself that after healing I would travel a lot. And I'm in travel mode.
I love traveling, it allows me to open my horizons, it allows me to live unforgettable adventures, to meet different and interesting people, to learn from other cultures, it is very enriching.
I have decided to collect moments, experiences and less material things.

Bye cortisone

Last Wednesday I received THE news.

The doctor informed me that I can finally stop taking cortisone. I jumped, screamed, cried of emotion ... I succeeded!
It was 9 years taking cortison and it was a big question mark if the day would come when i could stop it. And the moment arrived. Like many other positive moments in this path of recovery, this has been been the result of much effort, resilience, decisions, faith a lot of patience and a bit of luck. Although I believe in luck, I believe more than if you want something you have to focus on your goals and visualize success.
I'm very grateful.

Saludos

8 years

Today 26th November 2017 is the 8th aniversary of my stem cell transplant. I am most grateful to my brother Pasquale for his donation. He saved my life. He is my superhero.

I have recovered marvelously, but it is cleat that there are side efects to such an invasive treatement. There is always the need to see my hematologist every two months, an now and then a specialist, and of course i still go to Basel to my yearly check-ups to. But nothing to be concerned about!

2017 has been an intense year, many changes, lots of travel, positivism that God will provide blessings and good things will come.

Cheers.

Viviendo momentos intensos y maravillosos

It is going to be a good year

Life has its ups and its ups and downs, but we have to firmly believe it always gets better. We just need hope, perseverance, resilience and the usual bit of luck. Trust and believe.

No big deal.

A Dios gracias. Un fuerte abrazo.

Time flies

It has been a year since my last blog entry.

Here a satus report on my health:

I am feeling great, my health is stable and my medical check-ups take place bi-monthly in the Canton Hospital Luzern and annually in the University Hospitality Basel. Whenever Igo to my annual checks, I need to visit every existing specialist, to ensure EVERYTHING is fine.

Even though i am doing great, my check-ups will take place for ever. Once patient, always patient.

I take 35 pills a day, which is nothing compared to the 100 and something i took during the chemotherapy and after the stem cell transplant.

My current health issues are not life-threatening, just collateral damage , which may heal or not, according to the doctors. I take it light, no big deal.

These dates are full of bad memories. In March 2009, my health deteriorated seriously and on April's fool I received the Leukemia diagnosis, the worst joke ever.! Today, 8 years later, it is my turn to laugh. Because i am so happy and greatful of being alive, to have healed and to live a normal life.

Thank God!

Life is beautiful, not perfect. Celebrate it!

Finally I printed my blog and occasionally I glance at some of the passages I wrote. A diary with a very poignant and honest content. Reading it does me well, and for every tear I shed, I get a big laugh at the silliness that occurred to me despite the hard time I was going through. I think that balance of positivism , realism and lightness in moments of despair and pain were a pillar to keep my health and focus to keep going. An attitude : this is temporary and shall pass. And we must make the best of it! And indeed, from this ordeal I learned many life lessons that have made me a better person today. Everything has its positive side: you have to search for it, you have to find it, you have to believe it. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Life is beautiful , not perfect. Celebrate it!

6 Years later

Time flies. Last November was the 6th anniversary of my transplant and as usual had to go on check ups with each and every existing specialist, to make sure my body is functioning as it should. As I feel really well, I always go in a positive state of mind, but i would lie to you if i said that I go relaxed and fearless. Restlessness, anxiety are there. What if something is wrong? I already experienced that in a fraction of a second, a diagnosis changed my life forever.

The checkup results were very good. There is always something here and there, but it is not the end of the world. It could be so much worse. I see this as collateral damages, scars of war. A reminder of what I have been through, what I suffered. This motivates me to take good care of my body, my mind, my soul.

And nothing like an adecuate and balanced lifestly to continue my wellbeing. Detoxing my body. And this is where I stand today, thriving, living my life fully!

Thanks for always being there. Hugs.
