So schade.

Schauen wir vorwärts zum nächsten Arztbesuch.

Ich halte euch auf dem laufenden.

Sobrepeso

Overweight

One of the side effects from cortisone (mi frenemy, as I call it) that I have to take is weight gain: more apetite, liquid retention, bloating of the body and face, etc.

I have gained 11 kg since I began therapy three months ago. Until the cortisone stops, there is little I can do to avoid the extra weight.

It´s very hard to lose control of my body again; hunger and anxiety attacks, the clothes that do not fit, my feet that ache because they are not used to so much weight; my "Buddha" face that reminds me of my bad times in chemo. At first I was worried about my appearance and I had a conscience attack for being so superficial. But I know how much it cost to lose 23 kg of extra weight after the 2009 chemo treatment!

But alas, the important thing is to control the complications and appearances can take a back seat.

I have learned to look myself in the mirror and see the warrior in me, not the chubby person it reflects and I know my dear ones see me as the first.

I just came from my bimonthly check-up in Basel and the cortisone dosage remains the same. The complication is relatively under control, but not enough to stop taking medication. Bummer.

Let´s see how the next appointment goes.

I´ll keep you posted.

Neuigkeiten

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graft-versus-Host-Reaktion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graft-versus-host_disease

Three months have passed since I had to begin taking medication against post-transplant complications called GVHD (graft-versus-host disease).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graft-versus-host_disease

This setback has been a very hard blow for me and has affected my state of mind.

I have never been in such a negative frame of mind, dealing with the feelings I have had in the last three months. To anyone who has asked about my wellbeing, I have answered that I felt BAD!!!

I am not doing so well, because the medication I am taking have such secondary effects like insomnia, tiredness, weight gain, bad mood, etc… I am not well, because I am again feeling like a patient, because I have regular check-ups and there is always, in the back of my mind, the question of additional complications. When or if I will ever be able to stop taking medication? Will there be more side effects from the chemo and radiation?

I am trying not to dwell on this and go forward. But my worry is bigger than the positivism that has characterized me for the last 3 years.  This is now an ongoing war with myself.

But I go on, moving forward, fighting, with good and bad days, like everybod

Neuigkeiten

WAS!!!!!

No queda otra.

Un fuerte abrazo.

News

In November, I announced that soon I would be writing the final chapter of my blog, based on the fact the my values were stable, my doctors were happy with my progress and my medication therapy was about to end.

And I was wondering what to write in the final chapter of my blog, that I hadn´t written before? Was I ready to close that chapter? I procrastinated, four months went by and on a recent appointment at Basel´s hospital when I expected to have all my medication halted, my doctor announced that my liver is swollen, as a result of lack of adaptation of the new bone marrow to my body, that I had to restart my immunosuppressive treatment (that was suspended some months ago) and take cortisone all summer to help reduce the inflammation.

WHAT???!!!!!

It was very bad news, it shocked me, what does that mean? My medication cocktail again... and cortisone!!! What about side effects? My mind was running memories of my illness like a bad film, remembering all that I went through and was trying to put behind me... I thought I had worked through all this, but it seems I had not.

The degree of disappointment and shock was huge, that I cried all the way back from Basel. I finally discovered that what made me so sad was not fear, but the fact that my goals and expectations were so high, that they didn´t come through. Like it or not, I am still a "patient".

I am still sad, but to encourage myself, I put everything in perspective: things could be worse, I already know the side effects of the medication, I can continue with my old routine.

Now i have to go more regularly for check-ups is shorter and luckily my liver is getting better.

So I am walking forward and accepting my reality. There is just not another way.

A big hug.

Der 2. Geburtstag

2nd anniversary

It´s nearly impossible to believe that it has been two years since the transplant. If my aunt Sila didn´t remind me today, it would have been one more day of my life.

How am I after two years? Excellent, progressing. I take 42 pills weekly, am still immunosuppressed, still do not travel by plane abroad and get tired easily when exercising, but I feel almost the same as before and am full of life.

Every day I feel closer and closer to the end of this “estrange” chapter of my life. Before I would have called it a dark chapter, but now I think that it had its positive effects, that have allowed me to grow immensely as a person and to deepen the relationship with my loved ones.

On 28 November i have a medical check in Basel Hospitality with bone marrow punction. If results are good (available end of December) then i have decided t write my last blog and close officially this chapter.

I attach some recent pictures, images say more than words ;-)

Alles ist in Ordnung, es ist nichts

Disfrutando del verano

Happy Birthday Peter

Everything is all right, it´s nothing

My check-ups for the last year have had excellent results. My blood values are healthy and every ailment I reported was either a side effect from my medication or from the therapy. My favorite phrases of “everything is all right “ and “it´s nothing” that I so frequently hear from the doctors, make me so happy. I know that I´m lucky and that there is no guarantee that it always will be so.

Like at my last visit to the gastroenterologist, my digestive system has no abnormalities and magically (and thanks to linseed) my stomachaches have disappeared.

Endoscopies, colonoscopies…

My stomachaches continue. These last weeks have been particularly uncomfortable, because of the pain that in the past lasted a couple of hours and now it wouldn´t go away.

I went to the gastroenterologist that submitted me to all possible exams, the doctors want to avoid any risk and be able to discard something serious.

The results came back negative, which is good. But my aches haven´t gone away.

Searching for the root, amongst other things, I read about the side effects of the immunosuppressant medication and only my name was missing on it…

Regrettably, I don’t know when I will be able to stop taking this medication, which is the most important one. Until then, the doctor recommended healthy eating (a lot of vegetables and fruits), to avoid stress and to exercise regularly. To have the healthy living that everyone must strive to achieve.

I am taking the aches with philosophy. The hazards of life. Scars of war.

Spitalbesuche

Observing bees

Girl time

Nice view in Lucerne

At the museum of Transport

Hospital visits

I have monthly check-ups at the hospital. The hospital per se doesn´t give me bad memories, nor it makes me sad.

What gets to me is seeing the patients around me, their pained expressions and their uncertainty of the future, the compassion in the faces of their companions.

And I think what I lived at the hospital was an odyssey and now is something else: I come and go as I please and every check-up has come up fine, and the situation feels better than what it was 2009.

And I think about how lucky I am.

And that this dark chapter in my life is coming to its end.

And the next chapter will soon begin.

Weniger Medikamente

Less medication

Last week I had my monthly check-up. My blood values are stable and they reduced one medication, making now 69 the number of pills I have to take weekly... how awesome! Now the million dollar question is why do I get stomach aches? I have an appointment with the specialist scheduled for the end of the month.

I am being vaccinated against all childhood illnesses, because I am beginning from zero, like a little baby (and how they hurt, I think one gets weaker with age). My next general check-up is at the beginning of August. Will they reduce my medication? I hope so!
