Jackson Five

Jackson Five

I November, before the transplant, the doctor told me that there was a possibility of staying bold, because of the strong chemo and radiation. A sock!... being permanently bold? It would be the last straw, besides I was never a fan of my wig. What joy when my hair began growing again, alas without any form and with lots of gray hairs, abundant, with dandruff; hair is hair, just the same! With thi, I will post a photo so you can see for yourselves how much it has grown. I had my first hair cut two months ago. I was overjoyed.

Big plans

Last year the doctor told me that after the transplant I would be under medical restrictions for some time.

Because I was going to have sooo much free time, I began concocting big plans in my head for all the things I wanted to do in 2010. Among those plans was traveling to Panama for the kids summer vacation, tidying up the house, doing the photo albums, answering all my email messages, cleaning my computer files and a thousand things that I had pending.

Reality beat me to the punch: because of my weak immunological system, I cannot travel; because of the strong medication, I cannot concentrate for long stretches of time and I get tired easily. I really need the doctors appointed rest from the harsh chemo and to get used to my new bone marrow. I have accepted the fact that I need this time for myself and that this is most important if I want to be OK. Now instead of planning big, I plan small and little by little I achieve my goals.

I cannot believe I had to get to this point, go through so much to arrive at this conclusion.

Alas, it is never late to learn to live better.

Unsere ersten Ferien

Nuestras primeras vacaciones

Our first vacation

Last week we had our first vacation since my illness.

We went to Ticino, Switzerland´s Italian part and stayed for 4 days. It was wonderful.

Preparations were thrilling for me: I dreamt of this moment for a long time, but I wondered if everything was going to be fine and if I was forgetting something, taking all the medication I needed and if this was enough. Also if I would get sick and have enough strength, etc.

The first day was fantastic, the first night.. awful.. I got food poisoning and was vomiting and had diarrhea.. And a thousand thoughts went through my mind: an ambulance picking me up at the hotel, IV, being hospitalized, ending my vacation time, etc.

Peter called the doctor in Basel to ask for advice and the doctor told him the symptoms were related to food poisoning and if this was so, it wasn´t the end of the world and that I would be fine in the morning. Listening to that, I vomited with ease, because 6 hours of feeling sick was nothing… I woke up better the next morning, I rested in the hotel and the next day I was at top form (for my standards, anyway) and everything followed marvelously.

I cannot wait for the doctors to give me the Ok to fly and go to Panama. For the time being, this is forbidden, so I will have patience.

Keine Neuigkeiten sind gute Neuigkeiten

Hallo zusammen.

No news good news

No news good news

Hello everybody

I have been out of touch, but hope that you haven't been worried. I have been enjoying life and time has flown... thus I haven't written for two weeks. I went for a regular check-up at Lucerne's hospital and my doctor is still satisfied with the results. And yesterday, I received a written official communication from the hospital at Basel stating that I am still in remission, six months after the transplant... What a relief (the word remission has become one of my favorite).

I took the opportunity to visit the nurses at the 12th floor of Lucerne's hospital in order to say hello, give them the good news and thank them personally. I was in that hospital for approximately 6 months and I was glad to see them and surprise that the visit didn't saddened me although I went through very hard times while I was there, those hallway that I roamed so many times, the smell of disinfectant. I think it's a good sign that I am recuperating not only physically, but also emotionally. What happened, happened and I have to look ahead.

Hasta la vista, babies.

Mein Freund/Feind: Das Kortison

My frenemy: cortisone

As promised, the doctor called me personally to tell me that the results from the cortisone production test, done on Monday. The good news: my body is producing cortisone at a normal level (I didn´t know that the human body produced cortisone…) so they lowered my dosage to 2.5 mg. This is the last dosage before eliminating the medication completely. I began with 80 mg in January. I have had a love-hate relationship with cortisone: Hate, because I have had so much, I was disfigured, had so many side effects, but it saved my life (between other things), it really did and I cannot take that away!

The immunosuppressant dosage has not been lowered yet, but they had told me that I would be taking it for a couple of months more. The good thing is that bone marrow transplants do not require taking those for life, like it´s needed with other transplants. A bit of luck between my bad luck ;-)

Yuppiieee

Gracias Diosito.

Yuppiieee

I went to Basel today, for my monthly control.

It was a wonderful day, full of good news:

My regular blood pressure of 120/80 has returned; medication was the culprit for my high blood pressure.

They may lower my cortisone dosage and the immunosuppressor (that would be wonderful)

The mamography results were good

And the best of the best, the results of my bone marrow exam confirmed that my bone marrow is working well and is free of cancerous cells. Brother you are the best!

Thanks God!

The "queen" of multitasking

Before, I impressed myself with the many things I was able to do simultaneously, to maximize my time and be more effective:

-talk on the phone while cooking and setting the table...

-working from home while washing and drying the clothes...

-Playing with the kids while using my Blackberry and talking to the neighbors...

-Reading my mail and a magazine while sending sms...

And a thousand examples more.

During my illness, I was so tired and medicated that I found it very difficult to concentrate, therefore I could only do one thing at a given time and thus I found that, in the long wind, it was a better way for me to live: one thing at a time, but intensely and with my full attention. A 100% for everything.

Have a nice weekend

Du siehst gut aus!

Nics

You look great!

A while ago, if somebody told me that I looked great, I didn´t believe it, because I was fatter, had more gray hairs, the clothes I was wearing were cheap, mismatched, it was something or the other. I was never satisfied with myself.

Now I believe it a 100% when told that I look great. I have looked better before physically, but now I look happy, grateful, peaceful, loving, energetic, willing to live. And that is what makes someone beautiful, not appearances, not a top model build, or the latest fashion.

A big kiss for all the beautiful people who read this blog.

Gutes Zeichen

A good sign

For the first time in 15 months, doctors keep me waiting for an appointment at a Swiss hospital. They had always been punctual and they apologized for any delay. What a great feeling to be kept waiting, I was happy, because I had the feeling that there was no sense of seriousness or urgency, it was one more check up, one more patient... And so it was.

On Thursday, I had an appointment with the ophthalmologist, because two weeks ago they had noticed that the optical nerve in both eyes was swollen. But like magic, two weeks later, it is normal again, there is a minimal inflammation in the right eye, but nothing mayor. What a relief!

There is always something, low white cell levels, swollen liver, optical nerve, and I suppose that this will be so for some time. I´ve had the luck that this are just passing problems and not painful, so I won´t complain.

What is more, I am beginning to get resign myself to this.

* Was bedeutet eigentlich "normal"?

* Wer gibt mir das Recht, Leute als "normal" zu kategorisieren?

* Wurde ich "abnormal", weil ich krank war?

Y ella me preguntó "- y qué cosas hace? ".

Buena pregunta, pensé... Y pensé otras cosas:

* Qué es ser "normal"?

* Quién me da el derecho de clasificar a los demas de "normales"?

* Es que el haber estado enferma me puso "anormal"?

A "normal person"

The other day, the doctor asked me how I felt; and I told her "fine", and that every day I can do more. And she asked me "and what do you do?" And I answered "well, things that normal people do". She laughed and kept on asking: "and what do normal people do?"

Good question, I thought... and I thought other things:

*What is to be "normal"

*What gives me the right to label other people as "normal"?

*Did being sick make me "not normal"?

Well, I had to tell her something, so listed the things I do... vacuum, laundry, go out for coffee, go to restaurants, etc... day to day things... normal, because they are regular things that make life beautiful.

Mariangela?

Mariangela?

I remember with sadness when I was walking on the street at the beginning of the year; a lot of acquaintances walked by and didn´t recognized me, because I had 20 more kilos, no hair and a face swollen by cortisone.

Now, with a minimum dose of cortisone, with hair and 10 kilos less, I am more recognizable. Those who didn´t know I was sick thought that I had put on weight and my short punkish hair was a sort of modern haircut – a midlife crisis thing. Still sad, but less. It is exciting to recognize myself in the mirror. Yes, that face in the mirror looks more and more like me. The doctor told me back in April that a year from now, if not before, I will be my old self. What are ten months!

Jetzt muss ich also 120 Tabletten pro Woche schlucken..

Like a Ferrari

My 6 month check-up after the transplant was scheduled for Monday 14th. It was a crazy day. I left for Basel on the 5:45 train. The plan was as follows:

8.30 General control for blood samples, blood pressure, temperature, etc.

9.30 Ophtalmologist

10.30 Hematologist

11.00 Pulmonary function

11.30 Lungs CAT

13.00 Dermatologist

14.00 Dentist

16.00 Gynecologist

Going left and right, everything was fine in general. The hematologist told me I was running like a Ferrari, with the manual break on, being the break the anti suppressive that maintains my defenses low.

They lowered my dosage of the medication for the blood pressure and added two more medications, so I am taking now 120 pills per week…

The bone marrow test results will be ready in two weeks.

Saludos

Another puncture

The doctors don´t get tired of taking samples from deep into my body. Today I had the bone marrow biopsy, as part of my six month check up. The results will be available in two weeks.

The excellent news is that there´s nothing wrong with my liver, simply too much medication…the thing is that they didn´t eliminate any of them, they only lowered the dosage of the bold pressure medication (because now I do have high blood pressure because of the medication I am taking). I hope that someday I´ll get back to my 120/80.

The next trip to Basel will be on the 14 and 15 of June,,, two days of check-ups to visit all the specialists that there are. To insure that everything goes well.

I´ll keep you posted.

Keine Neuigkeiten – „gute“ Neuigkeiten?

Mein erster Schluck Alkohol in 14 Monaten… Danke Andrea, Roger und Gianna.

No news, good news?

No news, good news?

Latest on Friday, doctors were supposed to give me the results from the liver biopsy. The doctor and I have agreed that the hospital will call me if there is something bad to report, otherwise they won´t call.

On Thursday, when I woke up from my afternoon nap, Rafa told me that the hospital in Basel had called and left a message on the answering machine. I went pale, thinking that the reason for the call was the biopsy and I came down the stairs in two seconds flat. The message was to confirm the six month control appointment for June 7th (that includes a bone marrow exam) and another one for June 14th for the rest of the exams (lungs, x rays, dentist, ophthalmologist, gynecologist, etc, etc, and many more etc…) No news from the biopsy. I called back and asked about the biopsy. The nurses didn´t know anything about it. Good news, I believe.

Early last week I went to Lucerne Hospital to check up on my white blood cells (that are ok again) I told the doctor that I had a wedding with a baptism to attend on Saturday, and asked if I could go. He told me: “of course, have fun”. And I went further and asked him if I could have a glass of champagne for the toast,,, he laughed and said “of course, it is a very special occasion, but don´t go overboard and drink all day or a glass with each person” and we laughed (how well the doctor knows me, I thought ;-)

Well, I promised him that this time I wouldn´t participate in the contest for “Queen of the tequila shots…”

I can drink 1dl of champagne or wine. My first taste of alcohol in 14 months. Thanks Andrea, Roger y Gianna!

More from Thursday 27

The other reason for being sad on Thursday was that the hematologist told me (in the afternoon, after the procedure; while I was still resting, with pain, and fasting...) that my white cell values were very low, weird notion, and that maybe I had a virus.

Listening to the word virus, alarms sounded in my brain and it was like taking another punch from life... I was steamrolled by the virus I had on February.

They told me I had to go on the 31th to the hospital in Lucerne for a check-up. I was very worried the whole weekend. I went to my appointment on Monday and my white cells levels were normalizing. Nobody knows for certain why they went down, but they do know that it is a good sign that they are going up. It seems to have been a false alarm. What a relief!

Mini scar from liver biopsy

I´d rather forget days like this one

On Thursday 27th, I was subjected to a liver biopsy. On the night of the 26th, my mother and I spent the night at a hotel in Basel that is located two minutes from the hospital. Because of the early hour for the appointment and the fact that the trip from Luzern takes two hours, this was a wise decision, one less stressful thing.

The 27th began ok, because I had time to watch one of my favorite sitcoms “Everybody hates Chris” I arrived at the hospital in good spirits. They drew blood and at 9:00 I was finally called to hepatology for the biopsy. Everything was fine until I got to the operating room… through my head passed the last 14 months, all the machines I have been on, exams I have had, cables they had stuck on me, shots, samples: blood, bone marrow, urine, feces, phlegm, mucous membrane from the throat, from the nose (way back), etc and now the liver too.

The anesthetic shot made me hurt. All in all, the procedure didn´t last more than five minutes and they got two liver samples, each a hair size… mini mini. Look at the photo, But going out of the operating room, my shoulder began to hurt (this is normal from this type of procedure) and I began crying. The pain, frustration, the rage, the sadness. When will this stop?

At once, they began giving me pain medication that, eventually, had an effect.

I had to stay four hours in bed, fasting, and then they allowed me to go home. The pain in the liver persists, luckily mild, but it is normal and will go in a couple of days.

The frustration, rage and sadness have stayed with me.
