The donor
From Peter
The stem cell donor for Mariangela, her brother Pasquale has to be injected twice daily since last sunday. The medication stimulates the production of these cells that will replace Mariangelas' defective bone marrow. Thursday morning, the day for the transplant, those cells will be specifically extracted from Pasquale's blood stream in order to be given to Mariangela.

One week
From Mariangela
It has been a week since I was admitted at the hospital in Basil. The time has passed relatively fast, overall because there has always been something to do outside the room: check-ups, radiation… isolation in half.
The real isolation begins Thursday, with the transplant, because all treatments will be performed in the room.
The nurse advised to imagine the room not as a prison, but as protection; point well made, but it is difficult to use such a romantic light under these circumstances.
I will find a way to keep entertained.

Bestrahlungen

Radiation sessions

From Mariangela From today, from Monday, until Wednesday, I will receive two daily sessions of full body radiation, as preparation for the transplant. I am not going to hide the fact that thinking about the radiation has brought me anguish since last week, I have asked for sedatives, I have cried, haven’t slept well… All because the procedure is totally unknown to me and the side effects attributed to that procedures are so wide. Today, at 7:00 a.m. they took me to a big radiation room for the first one-hour session. The procedure in itself was simple, they put me in a special bed, connected me to some cables, asked me to be as still as possible, put the CD I took on and the machine that was far from me (an that appears a NASA telescope) began to irradiate “invisible” rays. In the end, I was a little disappointed. I was expecting something spectacular, colorful, like a laser shower type Star Wars show… maybe I have been watching too much TV while sick. I think so! The next session is scheduled for 5 p.m. and I am psychologically better prepared. “May the force be with me”.

Was nützten die 6 Monate agressive Chemotherapie in Luzern?

No siempre buenas noticias

Not always good news

From Mariangela
The news I got form my doctors Thursday morning made my world tumble: they found between 5 and 15% of malignant cells in my bone marrow. The shock, the sadness, obviously questions popped in my head: how is this possible, what value were six months of aggressive chemo in Luzern, do they need to postpone the transplant and have another six months of chemo?
Basically, the doctors explained, patients with my type of leukemia have lapses and the best shot at getting better is the bone marrow transplant. Luckily for me the transplant was already scheduled and Thank God my my brother Pasquale has a perfect compatibility with me.
The solution that doctor implemented was an extra round of chemo and I went from "standard low risk patient" to standard high risk patient", meaning a more intense supervision. The transplant will take place on November 26, as planned.
I am still confident that everything will be fine and I ask you to keep me in your thoughts and to keep on sending me all the energy in the world, because I really need it.

Ankunft in Basel

Llegada a Basilea

Saludos

Arrival in Basel
From Mariangela
I arrived on Tuesday at the Hospital in the University of Basel. I was very sad the whole day: everything is new and the uncertainty of what awaits me is killing me… but little by little I get used to it. It has been three days.
The hospital is huge, with a phenomenal and last model infrastructure.
The three last days have been full of check-ups, I have met the doctors and the nursed at this station and everybody is nice, and aware of my needs, that is good.
My room is spacious; I have a lot of amenities and it is only for me. I am in isolation.
More details will follow. Greetings

Koffern packen

Packing
From Mariangela
Tomorrow I will check into the hospital at Basel. I will let you now how it goes.
I began packing on Friday. I am not in a hurry. The idea is to be well prepared and to avoid forgetting something. But what do I need for a long stay at the hospital, besides my word puzzles, Blackberry, laptop and other gadgets? But not a lot, they even have underwear available.
And now, to enjoy my last day of “freedom”

Manchmal übertreibt man...

Fog
From Mariangela
Seven months have passed with a kind of fog in my brain: I couldn´t think straight, I was forgetful , had problems with concentration and to do intellectual things (the reason or excuse?): chemo!
And one day during this long "vacation" without chemo I felt the fog beginning to disappear and, little by little I can think clearly again. How good!
Although I don´t deny the benefit of a pause for all that thinking over and analyzing everything. Sometimes one tends to exaggerate...

Check-ups here and there

From Mariangela
At eight I had my first appointment at the hospital, with the dentist. They took out the stitches from the wisdom tooth surgery. The pain has ceased, and there is just a faint reminder.
At a half past eight I had my appointment with the hematologist; my blood levels are phenomenal: With the exception of my lymphocytes (basically responsible for my immune system), the rest are those of a healthy person. My hemoglobin levels are the same of a 15 year old!
Now I only have to prepare for my stay in Basel. One more week...

Geduld? Also bitte!

Pasquale und die Kürbis-Grimassen
Pasquale y las muecas de calabasa
Pasquale and the pumkin-faces

Etc. Todo es paciencia...que algun dia...
Y cuando caramba llega ese dia? Pues anticipo que mi paciencia tiene limites...

Patience? Please!
From Mariangela
One of the moments that frighten me more is when I look at myself in the mirror. I see the image looking back at myself and I don't recognize her: no hair, no brows, no lashes, and no less than 18 extra kilos.
Leukemia and chemo not only have given me pain, but also have transformed me into an ugly woman.
The chemo treatment ended a month ago and I tought that my hair and my lashes were going to grow back immediately. But I was wrong, I have three lonely lashes in my left eye... A month is such a short time.
My hematologist has recommended patience, because my hair will grow back. The nutricionist has told me that I will loose the extra weight. The dentist has advised patience, that the pain from my wisdom teeth will cease. My neurologist has asked me to be patient, because the sensibility in my right leg will come back. The doctor in Basel has told me that the procedure for the transplant will require patience, etc. Everyting means patience, that some day... And when is that day finally coming? Because I foresee that my patience has limits!

Der Spender ist eingetroffen

Von Mariangela
Willkommen Bruder!

The donor arrived
From Mariangela
Welcome dear brother! Monday afternoon my brother arrived. The next morning, we went with Peter to the hospital in Basel so Pascual could have a general check-up. I couldn't watch as they drew so much blood from him because of me:-(
It's such a blessing and such good luck to have a donor in the family. Three weeks from now Pascual and I will be like siamese twins: I will always have him with me!!! How amazing!

It hurts
From Mariangela
I was in such pain, because of a tooth ache that I had to go to the dentist urgently. She opened the wound and did not find any infection or inflamation. Just the same she gave an antibiotic, just to be on the safe side: zero risk. I took the opportunity to ask (beg) the doctor to give me stronger pain medication: It has done its job, a little bit. The pain is still there, but is not that strong.
The good news is that from tomorrow we are going to have a dentist at home, because my brother Pasquale is going to be here. Cool!

Bombastisch

Awesome!
From Mariangela
I have good news and bad news
I had a check-up today and after looking at my tests´ results, the doctor said: “Awesome”. He is very satisfied with the recovery of my bone marrow. Very good news!
The bad news is that the pain from my wisdom tooth extraction has me hurting, especially in the early morning hours. And to make it worse, I injured my ankle at the hospital. Thank God it was not severe, it was more the surprise.
The doctor had advised me about the possibility of falling. Because of my therapy, my balance and the sensibility of my legs have been affected and my muscles are weak. Imagine if my sprain had had worse consequences. It would have been the worst…

It´s finally out!
From Mariangela
The poor dentist had to fight in order to take out my wisdom tooth: she pulled, drilled, pushed…. God bless the inventor of anesthesia, because I felt no pain, and only saw her sweat. Regrettably, anesthesia does not last forever and at dawn pain and swelling began. But there is noting to do, it will finally go away. At least I am finished with this without major complications.

Weisheitszahn

Wisdom tooth
From Mariangela
Who would have known that at my age, I would have problems with my wisdom tooth …. Well, tomorrow morning they will take out one of the three wisdom teeth that I still have.
During my chemo treatment in Luzern, I had a couple of problems with my gums around that tooth. This is a preventive measure before the transplant, because we don’t want any risks on November. Like the saying goes, it is better to prevent….

Luzerner Marathon

Ausflug in den Schnee
Excursion a la nieve
Excursion to the snow

Lucerne marathon
From Mariangela
On this date, last year, I successfully ran Luzern's half marathon(well, not entirely, at half lenght I was out of breath:-). The idea was to run this year too, but leukemia changed those plans, among others...
The other day I dreamed that was jogging and swimming, which is a dream for now. I would like to, but my body repeatedly reminds me that it is not ready for many activities. For the time being, I am happy to go up and down the stairs of the house and, if I have some strength left, which is seldom the case, a little while on the cross-trainer.
I cannot wait to be fit again, but I have to be patient. There is little choice in the matter.

Nach und nach

Ferien auf dem Bauernhof
Vacaciones en la finca
Holidays on the farm

Poco a poco

Little by little
From Mariangela
The last two days have been restful. The doctor gave me on Tuesday the green light to exercise, but to no avail: going up and down the stairs several times a day is such a great effort that I have no energy left to do more.
Just the same, I did today 15 minutes on the cross trainer, I have to begin somewhere….
Like the Italian saying goes “piano piano va lontano” and little by little I can increase the intensity of my training. There is no rush!

Viel Glück zum Geburtstag Vivi

Von Mariangela
Gott segne dich Vivi.

Happy Birthday Vivi
From Mariangela
Vivi, God Bless You and we wish you many many more.
I had my check-up today and finally my blood values are increasing. I am not there yet, but I am on my way.
The doctors have given me the green light to exercise (whatever my body can manage). I am feeling stronger, so tomorrow I will begin my exercise routine, light version.
My next check-up will be on Monday. A little more time between each one, what a relief.

Aergerlich…

Buenas noches!

Bummer!
From Mariangela
I have not given the hospital time to miss me... Of the six days I have been at home, I have gone thrice to the hospital: two for regular check-ups and one for a platelet transfussion. An Tuesday morning is the next check-up. Definitely, my body is taking longer to recuperate. The doctor told me that after eight chemo that was to be expected... But luckily I feel well. Let's see how it goes on Tuesday.
Good night!

Visiting the zoo

All quiet on the Western front
From Mariangela
I have been feeling well these past days, which is very good because my defenses are low.
I am taking it easy, because altough I feel well, I don´t know about my blood levels. My next control will be on Friday, and I need to talk to the doctor before making "grand" plans

Ambulante Kontrolle

An der Luzerner Herbstmesse
En la feria de Lucerna
At the fair in Lucerne

Ambulatory check-up
From Mariangela
My body is taking its time to recuperate after the last round of chemo.
The transfusions I received this week were not enough to switch on my bone marrow this time.
Today, I needed further blood and platelets, because my levels continued to be very low and my immune system is still weak. The next days I need to stay at home quiet and resting to avoid catching infection. But I am lucky not to be stuck in isolation at the hospital.
Let's see how it goes.

I am home
From Mariangela

For reinforcement, I was given a blood transfusion, platelets to be exact.
Today I had my first control at the hospital and Monday is the next. Until the transplant in Basel they will we supervising everything from the hospital in Luzern.
I will be resting and home for approximately five weeks. I am so excited!

So berührend.

The long awaited moment arrived!
From Mariangela
Today, after six long and endless months, my chemo treatment in Luzern is finished.
I cannot believe it. This is the moment I visualized for so long…
Peter, Rafael and Nicola were with me during the last infusion. It was very special to have them by my side during this significant moment. So touching. They fought alongside so closely.
And of course you were with me at this moment, in my heart.
I am aware that the fight continues, but I can see the light at the end of the first tunnel. With this experience, I will cross the next tunnel (in Basel) quickly and with more willingness, because I know what awaits at the end: a well earned rebirth!
A big hug to all and thanks for your support.

Countdown: 2 Tage

Ferien!
Vacaciones!
Holidays!

Countdown: 2 days
From Mariangela
Tomorrow’s chemo will be the last. Today’s was done through a lumbar puncture (the 15th) that left me nauseous and with a terrible migraine. But the side effects have tone done a little.
Also, today will mark the sixth month anniversary of my admittance to the hospital in Luzern for the treatment of my leukemia.

Fernseher

Family visit in the hospital restaurant

TV
From Mariangela
It's been 5 days and I have yet to feel the need to watch TV, nor the inclination to stare at the ceiling of my hospital room, activities that in previous phases have been routine. Now I feel the need to read and do word puzzles, even in German. It is a good sign, it is the sign that my brain is preparing for normality, and little by little it recovers its capacity to perform more intellectual and interactive activities.

Mein armer Magen

Barbecue and mushroom season in the autumn forrest: Marvellous!

So hässlich.

Buen domingo!

My poor tummy!
Von Mariangela
Today in the early ours of the morning, my stomach was still upset, for the fourth day. How ugly. The nurse gave me some medication to no avail, so she called the doctor on call, who appeared in 10 minutes and eventually resolved the problem. I remember that in the first months of chemo, nights were my terror, I slept badly because of my fear of something happening while the doctors were not available. But experience showed me that my fears were unfounded and, since then I sleep fairly well. Now, at the first signal that something is not well, I let them know, without hesitation. The more one waits to let them know, the longer they take to solve it.
Have a nice Sunday!

Effects of the chemo
From Mariangela
Since the chemo began three days ago I have slept badly. Because the therapy involves nurses changing my infusions during the early morning, they have to draw blood to control the values, or the diuretic that they are giving me makes me get up to go to the bathroom frequently. The worst is that this chemo in the morning affects my stomach and I have been nauseous. So disgusting.
According to the plan, tomorrow Saturday or Sunday my scheduled will be normalized and my waking up in the early hours will end. The sooner the better.

How exciting!
From Mariangela
This photo was taken during an interdivisional soccer tournament that my colleagues organized. I would have loved to be there cheering everybody on. They took this photo together, with this lovely banner whishing luck. The gesture moved me very much and confirmed my belief in how marvelous my colleagues are and that they stand by me not only in the good times, but also in the bad. Thank you very much for your support.
I miss you a lot!
